Indian moviegoers were treated to a thrilling box office showdown this past weekend as Rajinikanth’s Coolie and the Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer War 2 lit up theaters, pulling in a massive Rs 430 crore in India over four days.

Released on Independence Day, August 14, these films took full advantage of the holiday fever, proving the unbeatable star power of their lead actors. Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, saw Rajinikanth at his charismatic best, with the film earning a whopping Rs. 65 crore on its opening day, according to Sacnilk. The Tamil action flick kept the momentum going, collecting Rs 61 crore on day two, with fans packing theaters across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. In Andhra Pradesh, it scored the second-biggest opening for a Kollywood film ever. By day four, Coolie had crossed Rs 100 crore in India, boosted by a jaw-dropping Rs 27 crore in international advance bookings, outshining its competitor.

On the other hand, War 2, the latest installment in YRF’s spy universe featuring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, kicked off with Rs 52.50 crore. It saw a huge 60% jump on day two, adding Rs 45 crore, thanks to strong showings in Hindi and Telugu markets. While its international advance bookings trailed at Rs 4.5 crore, War 2 still managed a global gross of Rs 79 crore on its opening day, proving its wide appeal across India.
