Blinkit Rolls Out Parental Controls for Family-Friendly Shopping

Blinkit, the famous Indian app to get a quick delivery, has introduced a new parental control functionality, making itself the first quick commerce app to allow parents to keep particular items out of the reach of children.

CEO Albinder Dhindsa shared the update on X, allowing users to conceal products such as sexual wellness products or nicotine with a 6-digit PIN rendering the app safer to families.

The feature was instigated by a LinkedIn posting of Ponsana David, a mother and CEO of Thai Green Power Solution.

She noted that children have a high chance of viewing adult products such as condoms or sex toys when they go to buy snacks or groceries.

It was her post that caught the eye of the CEO of Zomato, Deepinder Goyal and Blinkit immediately intervened to correct the problem.

Now, parents can block specific product categories from appearing in searches and add a recovery phone number for extra security. The app also sends a heads-up if someone tries to tweak these settings, which is great for when kids or others borrow a phone or tablet. This puts Blinkit on par with platforms like YouTube or Netflix, which offer kid-safe profiles and PIN-protected areas.

This move gives Blinkit an edge in India’s fast-growing quick commerce market, expected to jump from $8.2 billion in 2024-25 to $30 billion by 2027-28, per BNP Paribas. Other players like Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, and Flipkart Minutes haven’t rolled out similar features yet, making Blinkit a standout for family-focused shoppers.
