2024 T20 World Cup: Is Pakistan Still Eligible for the Super 8?

By Media Infotainment Team | Tuesday, 11 June 2024

Given that Pakistan faces Canada on Tuesday in New York in what looks to be a decisive match, it's interesting to find out how likely it is that they will advance to the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 round. Even though Pakistan has lost two straight, they still have a legitimate opportunity to make it to the Super 8.

In order to increase their net run-rate, which is now -0.150, Babar Azam and company must first take care of the controllables and defeat Canada and Ireland by a big margin. They do, however, also need favors from Group A's other clubs. Either India or the USA have to lose both of their remaining games, albeit it is doubtful for the former. Other than that, Canada has to lose both games.

"A lot of these guys have played a lot of T20 cricket around the world" -Gary Kirsten.

Head coach Gary Kirsten stated at a news conference prior to Pakistan's game against Canada that the players will ultimately bear the brunt of the burden if they perform poorly. Kirsten continued, admonishing Pakistani players to change in order to be relevant. "These guys are all international players and they know that when they're not performing at their best that there will be pressure put on them," he said, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo. That makes sense, but many of these men have played a lot of Twenty20 cricket over a long period of time, so it's ultimately up to them to determine how to further their careers."

Due to their inability to score in either of the two games, Pakistan's batting unit is most under pressure.
