After years of silence around the future of James Bond in video games, 007: First Light, is set to mark a major revival for the franchise. The game is being developed and published by IO Interactive, best known for the Hitman series, and is scheduled for release in 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo’s next-generation console.
In contrast to previous Bond games that were based on movie plots, 007 First Light is constructed on a new storyline. The story concentrates on the early days of Bond before he becomes a 00 agent, as Bond is described as a gifted yet unpolished agent who is learning how to cope with espionage. The strategy will enable the studio to establish a different interpretation of Bond without referring to a particular actor or movie time.
The game is likely to heavily rely on the experience of systemic stealth design of IO Interactive. Missions will provide the player with the freedom of accomplishing the objectives and the ways of achieving the goals will be a mix of infiltration, social stealth, gadgets, and direct combat. Guns and close-range action will be involved, but intelligence gathering, positioning, and timing will be the key factors in development. Cars and trademark Bond devices are also likely to be conspicuous.
It is being developed on the Glacier engine of IO Interactive which can withstand heavy environments and player-driven interaction. Areas shown until now can be characterized by a combination of urban background, controlled interiors, and global backgrounds typical of traditional Bond themes.
Project 007 will give IO Interactive an opportunity to create a Bond gaming franchise and not a one-off title. Providing success, 007 First Light will turn into the cornerstone of a new generation of James Bond games characterized by new original narration and contemporary stealth-based design.
